Kenya: An Authentic Family Adventure

Connect as a family on a Volunteer Adventure you will never forget. As you volunteer in Kenya in rural communities and immerse yourself in the unique culture, you’ll build family bonds and spend quality time together, doing something that is fun, different and meaningful for everyone.

Volunteer and learn about the joys and challenges of a traditional way of life first-hand. Discover the beauty of the people and the community and expose your children to new ideas, people and cultures—helping to build their empathy and understanding and increase their sense of global awareness.

Foster family values while gaining a deeper understanding of the social issues that locals face through hands-on learning with the community during the day, and by the fire in the evenings at our unique bush bar, with talks led by guest speakers, knowledgeable facilitators and in-country staff.

Create a lasting legacy as a family with your contribution to sustainable development  as you work alongside local families who too are creating their own legacy.

Trip Highlights

  • Build a school alongside local community members.
  • Walk in a mama’s footsteps as she fetches water.
  • Visit a local Maasai boma and Kipsigis homestead.
  • Study the art of Maasai beading with the expert guidance of the community’s women, under an acacia tree.
  • Explore the Maasai Mara by embarking on sunrise and sunset safaris.
  • Join Maasai warriors for traditional weapons training.
  • Discover Swahili culture and retreat to the white sand beaches of Kenya’s coast.

Discover Swahili culture and history from the comfort of our coastal beach house, Toriana, exclusive to Me to We guests.  We invite you to extend you stay and unwind before your Me to We Volunteer Adventure beings, or reward a week of volunteering with some time to relax and recharge.  Sited on four waterfront acres near Kilifi, enjoy fresh meals served on the vast terraces, inspiring Swahili and Moroccan architecture, and the white sand of Bofa beach footsteps away.  Enjoy the palm fringed beauty of the coast, and plug into local culture and way of life, with all the creature comforts of a private beachside home.

  • Tour the historic 16th Century Portuguese site, Fort Jesus.
  • Sail at sunset on a traditional wooden dhow fishing boat.
  • Visit the colourful markets and narrow streets of Old Mombasa.
  • Explore Gedi Ruins, a UNESCO world heritage site.
  • Swim in the private infinity pool and swim, snorkel and go beachcombing on Bofa Beach.

Testimonials

“Our family trip was beyond life-changing. It not only gave us greater perspective, but strengthened our family bond. I know it will be an experience that will stay with us for a lifetime.”

“So hard to express in a short space the impact that this trip has had on us all. [Our son] Taylor was changed the most, I think. He is much more socially conscious, has gotten over his difficulties with public speaking (at least on this topic) and exudes much more confidence. As my nephew said – he now looks you in the eye when he speaks. [Our daughter] Sydney has always had great passion for giving and would like to return to Kenya on a youth trip – we told her she would have to save her money! She thinks that Free The Children would be a pretty great place to work some day.”

“This trip was powerful. We met amazing people, young and old, that shared the common traits of a smile on their face and a drive to lift themselves up through hard work and education. Optimism for their children’s lives and appreciation for the work of Free The Children its staff and volunteers exuded everywhere we went. Dance, song and friendly roadside wave kept smiles on our faces. We participated in a water walk with the Mama’s of Kipsongol. A 50 litre barrel of water leaves a dent in your skull and a lasting understanding of the daily challenge in these Kenyan’s lives.”

“Yes… we all enjoyed ourselves immensely! Me to We’s attention to detail on the Bogani trip is very impressive! This trip is certainly our best family trip yet. Other trips included a month in the mountains in Poland, resort in Cancun, a visit to Atlantic Canada, visiting several Smithsonian museums in Washington DC, a trip to Orlando with visits to Disney and Universal Studios, etc.”

“Our adventure in Kenya was life altering.  Our family bond was strengthened through our shared challenges and new experiences.  We connected as a family on a whole new level.”

“All the way on the flights home, we talked about the ways we as a  family (and individually) we can continue to keep this experience alive in our minds and hearts and how we are going to continue to keep this great effort moving forward and maintain momentum to promote change.”

The unforgettable students of Enelerai Primary School: The Awali Adventure – Day Seven

(Appeared in the Calgary Herald blog April 23, 2013) — The smile of a young girl named Judy is one I will never forget. My short conversation with her leaves an indelible impression on my heart and in my mind, and – as I discover weeks later – it becomes one of my most lasting memories of a trip to East Africa with Calgary’s Awali group. Awali was formed by a group of Calgary philanthropists seven years ago. They’ve raised $5 million (largely from Albertans) to help fund professional development programs for teachers in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
