Tania Cheng

Tania Cheng joined Me to We as a motivational speaker in August 2011 and gets to do exactly what she loves to do – empower and engage young people in creating positive social change. Tania's passion for youth engagement and sustainability began with an inspiring teacher who encouraged her involvement in her high school environmental club and with an organization called The Otesha Project.

Tania strongly believes that education is integral to empowering youth and positive social change. At both her high school and university, she created and trained Otesha teams that delivered theatre performances in the community about social justice and environmental issues. While studying at the University of Waterloo, majoring in Environment and Resource Studies with a double minor in Psychology and Peace and Conflict Studies, Tania also coordinated the UW Sustainability Project, started a recycling program in one of the residences, facilitated workshops for the Student Leadership Program, and got published in an academic journal. During the summers, she mentored the high school participants of the Shad Valley enrichment program. After graduating at the top of her faculty, Tania embarked on a life-changing adventure: living on two wheels for two months on an Otesha bike tour across the Maritimes, travelling over 1,000 km from school to school to promote a sustainable lifestyle through theatre and workshops.

When Tania isn't on tour speaking to hundreds of youth with Me to We or serving her Board of Directors duties with The Otesha Project, she can be found riding her bike, watching or playing basketball, eating too much ice cream, journaling, or dabbling in graphic/web design. She lives by the philosophy that it's not simply that we can make a difference, but that we do – what kind of difference we make is up to us.

Michael (Mischa) Hamara

Mischa was born and raised in downtown Toronto where he lived with his parents and two sisters. His parents, a high school teacher and a lawyer/mediator, have instilled in him at a young age a passion for people and an understanding of the importance of education.

Over the past two years Mischa has worked at Me to We, as a Youth and Philanthropy Initiative Coordinator where he works with high schools across eastern Canada. As a coordinator, Mischa works with teachers and students, providing a program that offers young people a hands on experience in social change by empowering them to participate in the development of their communities and teaching them the importance of social responsibility.

Mischa graduated from Dalhousie University with a degree in International Development. His passion for learning about the world and its cultures has motivated him to participate in several exchange programs; he lived in France for a short time during elementary school, in high school he lived in Norway for a year; and in University he did an exchange program to Cuba where he studied at the University of Havana. After graduating he spent a year in South Korea where he taught English to high school students. Before returning home he spent several months backpacking through South East Asia to expand his knowledge of Asian Culture.

While a student Mischa worked at youth leadership camps as a councilor and a trip leader, guiding excursions in Algonquin Park, the French River and Georgian Bay. These camps instilled qualities of team work, and personal growth. Mischa also volunteered at camp Bucko where he worked with burn survivors to help build their self esteem and foster personal growth.

Mischa spends his free time with his family and friends. In the winter you can find him playing hockey at the local outdoor rinks and in the summer cycling along Lake Ontario.
