About Craig and Marc

Many people assume that as brothers we are interchangeable. It's understandable. Through our work with Free The Children and Me to We, we are dedicated to making the world a more just and compassionate place. At an early age, we each decided we would not wait to step up or speak out. Now we spend our days sharing the message that anyone can become involved in meaningful social change.

Even though we are brothers, we are not one of the same. Craig is passionate and follows his heart. We all get swept up in his dreams, and then Marc finds a way to put them into action. Marc is analytical and leads with his head. These differing styles can lead to many adventures. Despite what you might expect, we were not raised to be do-gooders. Some assume that instead of shuttling us to soccer practice and gymnastics, our parents chauffeured us to penny drives and bake sales for charity. (Truth is, we did both). But when we were asked what we wanted to be when we grew up, "activist" never came up. Mom and Dad dropped hints and hopes: "How about a doctor? Why not a lawyer?"

Marc did grow up to be a lawyer, though he has never practised. After he graduated from Harvard University, and then Oxford University with a law degree, he turned down lucrative investment banking jobs to build Free The Children and then Me to We. He has never regretted his decision.

To this day, you can always find Marc playing or watching a favourite sport. He has always been a natural athlete. He says he learned about empathy during his rugby days in high school and university, a sport that's been compared to a bar fight with finesse. There was no compassion during the rucks and mauls, but in between matches Marc rallied his team to hold pizza days and yard sales to help those in need.

Craig, meanwhile, spends much of his life travelling to our projects overseas or criss-crossing airports in North America delivering his message about social engagement to thousands upon thousands of students, parents and business people each year. He recently completed his EMBA, and although he is not the doctor our parents thought he'd grow up to be, Craig has dedicated his life to helping people. Like many physicians, he works long hours and often grabs sleep in short intervals on the fly. Thankfully, he can sleep anywhere.

Craig loves to travel and always carries his passport with him, in case he has to unexpectedly head to the airport. Each summer, he takes a long break in Kenya where he leads Me to We trips of volunteers and dignitaries. When he can he slips away to indulge his love of extreme sports and jump out of an airplane (with a parachute), scuba dive or climb a mountain.

So, we're not as similar as people might think. In the end, our differences make our relationship richer and our contributions to Me to We broader. Still, we like to say that we always end up in the same place, even if not at the same time.
