People often ask what led to the founding of Free The Children, now the largest network of children helping children through education.

How does a 12-year old simply read a newspaper article one morning over breakfast and then suddenly found an international children's charity? Were we raised to be "activists?" Can my own son or daughter find their passion and make a difference in the world, too?

These were the questions that led us to write The World Needs Your Kid: How to raise children who care and contribute with journalist Shelley Page.

The truth is, nothing just happens. A lot happened in the months and years prior to reading that newspaper article. Neither of us was a child prodigy discussing world politics from the cradle. Quite the contrary. We were kids – kids whose parents instilled some simple lessons about injustice and taking action.

They taught us lessons without us hardly knowing. Witness a scene from our childhood.

Brothers and founders of Free The Children, Craig Kielburger and Marc Kielburger, are two of the world's leading figures in youth empowerment. Free The Children, which works with more than one million youth every year, is the world's largest network of children helping children.

Marc and Craig are co-authors of the recent New York Times bestseller Me to We. Both are members of the Order of Canada and together, hold six honorary doctorates of education.

In addition, Marc and Craig are nationally syndicated columnists. Their word has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show as well as on CNN, BBC, 60 Minutes and The Today Show, and in People, Time and The Economist.

Shelley Page is a senior writer at the Ottawa Citizen and two-time winner of the National Newspaper Award. She has also received Canada's top investigative reporting prize. Shelley is mom to two girls from Hunan, China. Her writing on parenting issues has appeared in many newspapers and parenting magazines and most recently the anthology The Lucky Ones: Our Stories of Adopting Children From China. She is a director of the Children's Bridge Foundation, which supports orphans in China and elsewhere.
