THE SACRED CIRCLE: EMPOWERING A GENERATION OF YOUNG NATIVE LEADERS
Our programming for First Nations youth, the Sacred Circle, first took root in British Columbia, where a strong and vibrant aboriginal population exists. There, working in consultation with the Nanaimo School District's District Principal of Aboriginal Education, the Me to We team created this first-of-its-kind leadership program, designed specifically to meet the needs of aboriginal youth. Those First Nations young people excelled within the program and the model is now available across North America.
- Centred on the Seven Teachings (honesty, humility, truth, wisdom, love, respect and bravery) and the Medicine Wheel
- Workshops are a collaborative effort between teachers committed to aboriginal education, band members and the Me to We team
- Experienced Me to We facilitators work with one to two key aboriginal youth leaders (aged 18 to 25) and train them to harness their stories as facilitators, be knowledgeable about leadership skills, and support participants during and after the program
- Revamped Me to We curriculum for aboriginal youth includes the Sacred Circle Seven Teachings and the Medicine Wheel, as well as a Me to We Leadership: Sacred Circle one-pager that outlines the roles and responsibilities for all youth and educators involved.

“Essentially students were provided with the skills to allow them to develop a project they believed would make their school, community [and] world a better place. They looked for volunteer opportunities in and around their school [and] communities where they could give back or 'pay forward' ... The experience is one i personally would do again”
-Connie MacArthur, District Aboriginal Education Teacher, Nanaimo/Ladysmith School District
“[The Sacred Circle program] was well put together. There was lots of energy, good feedback and support for the students. Through the use of the activities, I could see the students from different schools really enjoy the time spent together as a community.”
-Connie Kulhavy, Aboriginal Resource Coordinator, Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District
