Who are we?

We are shameless idealists

Our culture is a living, breathing organism, built together through our work. We're shameless idealists with a contagious passion for social change.

Our offices are sort of like the command centre for helping others. Here we cultivate the Me to We movement in everything we do. From holding the door for a co-worker to volunteering together when the work day is done, to spearheading a walk of hundreds of kilometres to help war-torn Darfur. We eat, sleep and breathe the Me to We philosophy.

By spreading the movement, we help you build this Me to We culture in your own community and beyond.

Alex Apostol

Title: Director, Digital Media

Alex Apostol

Director, Digital Media

Interesting fact: Legend has it that Alex, wily and clever, crafted most of the jokes hidden in our curriculum.

Alex Apostol is a true Me to We success story. Now a full-time student of peace and conflict studies and special projects consultant to Me to We, as a young and brazen 14-year-old he walked defiantly out of his first day of leadership training, determined never to return. The next day, his parents dragged him back. He was irritated and annoyed, with arms folded, until a young and patient Me to We facilitator inspired him to stay on to the end of the Take Action! Academy.

Since then, Alex has taken part in nearly every Me to We program. Travelling extensively he has led international volunteer trips to Kenya, India and Mexico. From 2002-to 2004 he worked as the coordinator and lead facilitator for the Volunteer Now! program, a partnership between Me to We and school boards across Canada. Believing strongly in the power of humour to convey meaning to adults and youth alike, he has delivered speeches to tens of thousands of intent listeners and facilitated leadership training across North America, Europe, and on volunteer trips to Africa and Latin America. His work has been profiled by many local television and print media, including a youth leadership feature in Take More Action by Marc and Craig Kielburger. Throughout his high school career Alex received numerous academic awards and graduated with honours. For his dedication to youth development, Alex was awarded the TD Canada Trust Scholarship for Community Leadership, the Canada Millennium Scholarship, and the Canadian Merit Scholarship. In addition, he received awards from the Ontario Principal’s Council and Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation.

Growing from a rebellious teenager into an acclaimed leadership educator and full scholarship student, he continues to harness his wit and charismatic charm to inspire others. Who would have guessed that a reluctant first step would have such a profound effect on his life? When not moving-and-shaking, Alex indulges as a writer, concertgoer, and expert dog-walker.

Title: Director, Me to We Leadership

Hannah "Banana" Feldberg

Director, Me to We Leadership

Interesting fact: When travelling in Turkey, Hannah almost extinguished the eternal flame found at the top of Mount Olympus with an unexpected upset stomach.

Understanding that the mentorship her coaches, youth leaders, educators and counselors gave her shaped her identity helps to explain why Hannah Feldberg is so deeply invested in young people. She has always been a big follower of Free The Children and Me to We's work, but it wasn't until she met Marc Kielburger at a social entrepreneurship conference in 2008 that an opportunity to be directly involved in the organizations presented itself. She joined the Me to We team in 2009 as our director of Me to We Leadership.

Happy to put her study of academic theory into practice at Me to We, Hannah is finishing up her master's of art in recreation and leisure studies at the University of Waterloo. Hannah loves rain, laughing really hard, her hilarious family and her phenomenal friends. Passionate about engaging both youth and other community members in social issues, she is excited to be coordinating these amazing opportunities for the public to be inspired and motivated by our great keynote speakers.

To raise money, she was also a part of organizing a silent auction, a dinner theatre, a benefit concert and a poetry reading cafe. Always wanting to try a bit of everything, Trish went on to complete a degree in theatre at the University of Guelph, a yoga teacher training program, and a certificate in volunteer management at Humber College, where she worked directly with volunteers at the Durham Children's Aid Society. Kari devoured English literature at the University of Alberta and the University of London, UK, travelling as much and as widely as she could on student exchanges and backpacking trips. From Luxembourg to Russia to Thailand, she is fascinated by people's stories across the globe, especially those of women and young people.

After a creative writing MA at the University of New Brunswick and trips to P.E.I. to study the life of children’s author L.M. Montgomery, Kari worked as a writer in UNB's development and donor relations office.

In 2009, she moved to Toronto to pursue children's publishing at Ryerson University. It was while interning with Kids Can Press that Kari came across Me to We Books at a publishing event. This exposed her to the Kielburger story for the first time, and the idea of "children helping children" stuck with her.

As a member of the writing team, Kari is thrilled to contribute to such a passionate, unique organization committed to engaging youth in social change. She hopes to one day see the work of Free The Children firsthand!

In her spare time, Kari can often be found loitering in used book stores, bursting into song and dance, sobbing at inconvenient moments, thinking up excuses for costume parties and playing "pop quiz Harry Potter," a game invented by her sisters.

  • Kelsi Prince

    Me to We (Mob)ilizers Coordinator

Interesting fact: After spending a week camping in a tent on the frozen ice of the Arctic Ocean and being nose to nose with penguins in Antarctica, Kelsi has developed a freakish love for cold climates.

Kelsi Prince has been involved with Me to We and its partner charity Free The Children since 2005. Through participating in a Me to We international volunteer trip to Ecuador in 2008, various leadership and facilitation training workshops, as well as the Me to We Mobilizers program, Kelsi maintained close ties with our organizations for several years. Then, in 2009, Kelsi officially joined the team as a Me to We (Mob)ilizers Coordinator, allowing her to empower youth to use their voices and talents to create change.

Since the age of 15, Kelsi has travelled around the world–from Antarctica, to the Arctic, Iceland and Greenland–observing the impacts of climate change on indigenous populations. Interested in learning more about the social implications of environmental and development issues, she participated in two Me to We trips to Ecuador and Mexico in the summer of 2008. Now a student of Trent University's environmental studies and international development program, Kelsi continues to influence local and global change in both her professional and personal life. A passionate activist, she is an avid public speaker, having delivered more than 230 presentations in the past three years. She has also been involved in supporting student action projects through national environmental and social justice education programs.

After losing her voice for nine months and realizing how fortunate we are to be able to speak out for what matters, Kelsi is committed to helping empower youth to use their skills to make a positive difference in the world. She lives by the words of Leo Buscaglia, who said, "Our talents are the gifts that the world gives us, but what we make of those talents is our gift back to the world." In her spare time, Kelsi can be found enjoying the outdoors, singing, dancing, stargazing, laughing, hanging out with friends and giving free hugs–all with a smile!

  • Alex Meers

Manager of Me to We Leadership Programming

Interesting fact: Alex practices a martial art called Kendo.

Alex Meers officially joined the Me to We Leadership team in 2008, though he has been a strong supporter of Me to We and its partner charity Free The Children for many years. Prior to working at Me to We, Alex found inspiration through his experience at Soka University of America in California, where he took international studies. After learning about various world issues in school, he was motivated to take action–initiating Soka's first on-campus Free The Children club, wherein he fundraised to build a well in Sierra Leone.

Having spent several summers teaching English and managing summer camps in Europe, Alex developed a deep passion for working with children and youth. Alex's firm desire to learn about new cultures led him to several international experiences, including a period studying in Japan, where he took Japanese lessons for five months. As a leadership facilitator with Me to We Leadership, Alex has led youth trips overseas, guiding participants as they volunteer to build schools in developing countries. Having travelled to Kenya twice, Alex has now truly discovered his passion for social work and international development.

Though his travel experiences have brought him far and wide, Alex discovered that creating change must start in his own backyard, Toronto. When he's not travelling, Alex works at the Me to We office in Toronto and facilitates workshops to educate youth about global issues and empower them to create change.

    Kenya Trips Facilitator

Interesting fact: There are seven colours in a rainbow, and Andrea's hair has been each of those colours at some point.

Andrea Hinton's passion for positive social change has led her to host fundraisers within her community and take part in events that support causes dear to her heart. In 2007, Andrea was part of a Youth in Action group that raised enough money to build a school room in Sierra Leone, and helped promote social consciousness and empower her peers to take an active role in sustainable change around the world.

After graduating from York University with an honours degree in business administration, Andrea has spent her time travelling around the world. She has seen first-hand the devastating effects of poverty, but has also formed heart-warming connections with people from all over the globe. A visit to an orphanage in Cambodia helped Andrea see what amazing opportunities are possible for a young child with education and emotional support. She has also grown more adventurous over the years-riding elephants in Thailand, Camels through the deserts of India, and most recently, climbing an active volcano in Chile. Although she has visited six of the seven continents, Andrea realizes that there is still so much out there to see and so many people to meet.

Andrea loves to laugh, and that's what you will find her doing most of the time. Whether she's watching a Will Ferrell movie or hanging out with her family and friends, she always finds the humour in a situation. A line from a Jay-Z song helps Andrea to stay motivated each and every day. "Treat your first like your last and your last like your first."

  • Brandon McNab
  • Brandon McNab

    Kenya Trips Facilitator

Interesting fact: Brandon likes to take long walks... but is also intensely allergic to walking.

Brandon McNab´s position as a Kenya trips facilitator allows him to work with Me to We clients to facilitate their growth, perspective and understanding of some of the dramatic issues in Kenya. By drawing on past experiences, he does his best to guide each individual through their own unique journey through relationship-building, questions, leadership and going the extra mile (and/or kilometre-Brandon is both metric and imperial compatible).

Brandon has had the privilege to work as a forest fire ranger for the last four years. In those years, he made dramatic progress, gained valuable experiences and moved through many fire positions as his potential was recognized and honed. He gained great insight into different cultures by working with aboriginal Canadians in sometimes potentially life-threatening situations. In his time between fire seasons, Brandon travelled throughout Canada to gain an understanding of what our country is, who we are as Canadians and what we stand for. Once he felt he had an understanding for the cultural pulse of Canada, he ventured next to areas of the U.S.A., Mexico and Guatemala, where he taught himself Spanish while volunteering and working with local friends. Most recently, Brandon volunteered with a NGO in Cameroon, West Central Africa. There he worked with villagers in remote areas of the jungle, trying to promote alternatives to poaching the regions' endangered animals.

Brandon´s goal in life is to be excited to wake up every morning-always trying to bask in the many possibilities this planet has afforded him. As a newcomer to the Me to We team, he hopes his understanding of his blessings will manifest in his work. In a few words Brandon can be described as driven, decisive, compassionate, fair, calming and hairy.

  • Heather Farragher

    Leadership Facilitator

Interesting fact: In May 2009, Heather checked off a challenging item on her bucket list. Taking her love of campfires and smores to the extreme, Heather climbed to the top of an active volcano in Guatemala to roast a marshmallow over lava (yes, real red bubbling lava). Despite the extreme heat and her shoes melting, which complicated the hike down, it was the best snack she’s ever had.

Heather Farragher joined Free The Children shortly after this exciting experience in August 2009 as the Global Voices Coordinator in the Youth Programming Department.

Heather graduated from Ryerson University with a Bachelor of Journalism and minor in sociology and English in June 2009.

Having years of experience working with youth trailing behind her, Heather realized her passion for international affairs affecting youth and her desire to work with at risk children during her university career. When she caught the travel bug in second-year, she decided to see the world she was writing about and the issues she was studying first hand.

She began doing development work with youth in 2008 when she spent the summer living with a local family in Obuasi, Ghana. In response to the requests of local teachers, she created and led a sustainable, pay-it-forward style HIV/AIDS education and awareness program in local high schools where there had been no prior health promotion. While teaching over 150 students she realized that her journalism education was not meant to lead her into the newsrooms or studios, but instead into classrooms where she could introduce youth to world affairs.

After leaving Ghana, only craving more, Heather led a development project in Antigua, Guatemala during the summer of 2009. Here she had the opportunity to introduce her fellow team members to the issues of local indigenous people, help develop and facilitate programs at an alternative school for at risk youth, begin learning Spanish and fall in love with teaching even more.

Still passionate about teaching and international affairs, Heather is excited to work at Free The Children in such a unique position. She’s thrilled that her training as a journalist and experience as an international teacher and development worker, has led her to the Global Voices program, where she can share news on international issues with classrooms all over the world.

    Kenya Leadership Director

Interesting fact: A true music lover, Jodie's favourite singer is her old English sheepdog, Max, who wakes her up daily with his "singing."

This is Jodie Collins' second season with Me to We Trips in Kenya. During her time there so far, she has developed a working knowledge of the national language of Kiswahili and led groups from all over North America through their once-n-a-lifetime journeys to the heart of the Maasai Mara. Along the way, she has seen the Adopt a Village model at work, and experienced many social issues first-hand. Incidentally, she's also learned to make a wonderful cup of chai.

Before joining the Me to We team in Kenya, she spent her time away from school as a counsellor, unit leader and waterfront director at Olympia Sports Camp. As a role model and mentor at camp, she realized teaching was her calling. After taking her undergraduate degree at Ryerson University in radio and television arts, she attended York University's bachelor of education program. During her first two years as a teacher, Jodie worked as an instructor for the Toronto Catholic District School Board's Kenya Experience, a course that culminates in a Me to We trip to Kenya. As an educator on a trip to the Mara in August, 2007, Kenya quickly became a large part of her life. Jodie was moved by the kindness, generosity and resilience of the people she met.

As a teacher, Jodie loves bringing her interest for social issues and global awareness into her lessons. She hopes to one day start experiential learning programs all across the province. In her spare time, she loves playing basketball, reading and eating her Oma's spectacular baked goods. Yoga practice and great friends help Jodie stay stress-free and feeling great!

    Motivational Speaker

Interesting fact: Despite being raised by English-speaking parents, Jonathan learned to read and write in French first.

Jonathan Patton joined Me to We as a motivational speaker in 2009. An articulate communicator, he can´t wait to share his enthusiasm and energy with young people from across the country. His passion for social involvement was sparked when he first went to Kenya in 2006 with Me to We Trips.

While working toward his B.A. honours in history and international relations at Carleton University, Jonathan took every opportunity to learn about the world and its people through travel. Taking advantage of the long summer breaks, he´s taken two trips to Europe, travelling east through the Balkans and into Turkey. He also spent a summer in South America, where he volunteered with an after-school program for disadvantaged elementary school children just outside Quito, Ecuador. After graduating in 2007, Jonathan embarked on a two-year stint in eastern Africa. There, he lived and worked in the Kibera slums of Nairobi, and volunteered with SOS Children´s villages in Arusha, Tanzania. He also travelled through Egypt and Ethiopia in the North, all the way down to South Africa, where he volunteered on a wildlife conservation and environmental rehabilitation project.

An avid runner, most mornings Jonathan is out hitting the pavement, as he´s currently training for a half-marathon. When not at work, Jonathan is busy enjoying the outdoors, camping, biking or hiking. He has climbed both Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru the, 1st and 5th tallest mountains in Africa respectively. If not physically active, Jonathan loves reading, keeping updated on world affairs, being inspired by biographies and constantly searching for new ideas in pursuit of his goal to never stop learning.

    Leadership Facilitator

Interesting fact: Knowing that her daughter was an Indiana Jones fanatic, Kathryn’s mom invited Harrison Ford to her 10th birthday party. He didn’t come, but perhaps that was because he was celebrating his own birthday that day.

Kathryn Meisner joined the Me to We team in 2008 as a leadership facilitator, inspiring youth to take action on social issues and empowering them with tools to create change. When she was in Grade 9, Kathryn’s guidance counsellor nominated her to represent her high school at a leadership conference and, motivated by her newfound knowledge, she has continued to hone her leadership skills ever since.

A graduate of McGill University with a double major in psychology and cultural studies, Kathryn has extensive experience working with youth. She was the founder and facilitator of Talking Heads, an on-campus mental health peer support group. Kathryn was also a coordinator and facilitator for Rez Project, a workshop for all 2,000 students in McGill’s residences to make student housing a safer experience for everyone. As a Community Links Facilitator for the Sexual Assault Centre of McGill’s Student Society, she created workshops for students, university staff and organizations in the Montreal community, addressing issues such as diversity, sexual assault and anti-oppression. After graduating, Kathryn used her trusty facilitation skills as a youth employment counsellor to help young people secure sustainable employment.

Kathryn loves to cook and bake; her specialty is handmade chocolate truffles. Although she says she’s “inflexible and non-athletic,” she enjoys unwinding with yoga and spinning. Her mentors, family and friends have always supported Kathryn’s belief that, in the words of Helen Keller, “I am only one, but still I am one,” and she continues to live her life guided by these words.

    Leadership Outreach and Development Coordinator

Interesting fact: Krystie loves a good sun salutation first thing in the morning.

Krystie Babalos joined the Me to We team in B.C. as a leadership facilitator in 2008, and has now transitioned into the role of leadership outreach and development coordinator. Prior to joining the team, Krystie spent the summer volunteering on a philanthropic trip, working to build development projects for Me to We's sister organization, Free The Children. That same summer she also worked as an intern with the Funder's Network for Afghan Women, where she had the opportunity to see compassion without borders first-hand.

While pursuing a degree in psychology at McGill University, Krystie discovered a sense of inner peace in her work with disadvantaged children and youth. She managed a summer youth program for equal opportunity sailing lessons, worked in a subsidized day care and as a youth leader in a drop-in centre. One of her most challenging and rewarding experiences was working with children diagnosed with autism as an applied behavioral analysis therapist. It is her love of exploring what connects us in this world, however, that has cemented her will to work for the international community.

Since joining Me to We, Krystie has travelled around the world, from British Columbia to China, working with youth to develop their inner social activist. She has also worked with the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Aboriginal Education department to build an aboriginal leadership and life skills program. In her spare time, Krystie can be found meditating, doing yoga and painting.

  • Michael Fairless

    Manager of Global Leadership Seminars

Interesting fact: Michael is an award-winning dancer.

Michael Fairless developed a deep passion for music while very young, and as a teenager he came to appreciate the power that the art can have over people. He believes that music can help make us passionate about life and, used properly, can help empower young people as they aspire to a better world.

Although not a musician himself, Michael found himself easily befriending many people who are. After high school he found his place in the music world as a tour manager for high-energy rock bands. He spent six years travelling the world, managing the day-to-day logistics for the bands he worked with, while continuing to wonder at the universal power of music. Travelling opened Michael's eyes to the challenges we all face as part of a larger global community. It became clear to him that there is a need to spread more than just music to people around the world. He came home to Canada from his final European tour with a desire to connect meaningfully with young people in the same way that he and his friends had connected with them through music. Michael found a home at Me to We Leadership, where his goal is to help youth discover their inner passions and harness those passions to make a positive impact on the world. He believes that young people can pursue their deepest dreams through active community leadership.

Michael recently married Elisa Bertinato who, as an early childhood educator, shares his passion for empowering young people. Their life together is centred on their love of one another, their love of young people, and their love of animals, including their two dogs, Stella and Prosciutto.

    Take Action Provincial Coordinator

Interesting fact: Simona once hiked 5,000 vertical feet while in India to meditate in a temple that was more than 850 years old.

Simona Ramkisson joined the Me to We (Leaders Today) team in 2008 after graduating from York University with an undergraduate degree in criminology. But, after spending her undergraduate career attending lecture series' on social change and establishing grassroots letter–writing campaigns for causes she cared about, Simona realized her real passion lay in helping those in need in any way she could.

During her last year of university, Simona visited India and was changed forever after witnessing the extreme poverty experienced by a large number of people in the region. Urged by a professor to do what would make her happy and not simply what was expected of her, she decided to delay graduate school and work with local organizations devoted to social change and advocacy. After doing academic field research with a Toronto–based advocacy organization, she knew that she wanted to go a step further and do more to help others, especially children. Her first step was to become an in–class tutor, working with elementary school children experiencing mild learning and functional disabilities with the York Region District School Board. It was an experience that proved to be incredibly rewarding and life–altering.

In her spare time, Simona enjoys yoga, running and staying as active as possible. An avid soccer fan, she can argue about the sport for hours, if not days, on end. During her trip to India, Simona read a quote by famed social activist Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, painted on the side of a brick hut: "If you ask me, my ideal would be a society based on liberty, equality and fraternity. An ideal society should be mobile and full of channels of conveying a change taking place in one part to other parts." Simona believes that social change is possible even if it must start with the ideas of one person.
