Spencer West: What a We Day Vancouver!
The passion and the vibe you feel at every We Day was definitely there in Vancouver. But this one was particularly special for me. Why? Well, even though I’m onstage, with the amazing opportunity to reach so many young people, and backstage, with the awesome chance to meet so many committed and impassioned world leaders and entertainers, I rarely get a chance to actually see much of the show!
Luckily, my schedule changed all that in Vancouver. I didn’t have any media interviews during the morning, so for the first time I got to sit and watch a lot of the show. And that fresh perspective, for me, was really cool and eye-opening. As speakers, there’s so much to do during the day—meeting with honoured guests and doing interviews—that we don’t get to see much of anything. And when we go onstage and see the venue packed with young people—all staring back at the stage. But to take it all in from an audience perspective truly allows you to be a part of it, to get swept up in the passion and the positivity. It finally feels like I was part of the We Day audience—I’d always wanted to feel that passion and inspiration in the stands, so for me, that was an unforgettable experience.
And there certainly was so much to get inspired by! For me, listening to Sydney Brouillard and Molly Burke (a fellow Me to We speaker!) was probably a stand out highlight—I’m so moved by both of them. To see Sydney—not how she’s so young, but how she’s so powerful; the manner in which she holds the audience, emphasizing her words with her hand gestures and how confidently she spoke. She’s such an impressive speaker.
And I can’t leave out Shane! He knows how to reach people in such a unique way. As a spoken-word artist, he doesn’t speak at you, he speaks to your heart. And at Vancouver, Shane just went for it and it was a truly powerful performance.
As for backstage, I don’t really expect the We Day performers who I’ve never met to know who I am, so when Demi Lovato and Cody Simpson asked to see me, it was incredibly humbling. And Demi had such beautiful words to share with me—I was shocked. I was thinking, You’re incredible, you’ve done so much to instil confidence in girls and so you bravely discuss your personal life. It was a touching moment.
I can’t wait for more! Bring on the first ever We Day Alberta!
